What we collect
Only these. Nothing is bought from a data broker, and nothing is inferred about you beyond what is listed here.
- Your account
- Email address, name, and profile picture. If you sign in with Apple or Google we also store which provider you used and the account identifier they give us. If you sign up with an email and password, the password is stored only as a cryptographic hash — we cannot read it.
- Optional details
- Age range, gender, country of residence and country of birth. Every one of these is optional — you can skip them all, change them later in Edit Profile, or clear an answer you already gave, and “prefer not to say” is an accepted answer for gender. Age is a range, never a date of birth.
- Why we ask those
- Two separate reasons. Country of residence is functional: it decides which shops we show you, because a retailer that cannot deliver to you is no use to you. Age range, gender and country of birth are only ever read in aggregate, to see who Kumpairs is actually serving and which products are worth adding. None of them affects what you are charged, none is shown on your reviews, and none is shared with retailers.
- Reviews you write
- Your rating, title and comments, plus any photos or video you attach. Reviews are public once approved and show the name on your account.
- Video review audio
- If you record a video review, its audio is transcribed so the review can be read and searched. See Transcription below — this is the one place your content leaves our systems.
- How you use the app
- Search terms, the filters you applied, how many results came back, which result you tapped and where it sat in the list, and how long each step took. Alongside these: a session identifier, device type, platform and app version. Some of these are recorded without an account attached.
- This website
- Nothing. There are no forms, no cookies, no analytics and no advertising trackers on these pages.
Why we collect it
- To run your account — signing in, password resets, and keeping your comparisons and saved products attached to you rather than to a device.
- To publish reviews — showing your review on a product, and screening it before it goes public.
- To make the app work better — search terms tell us which products people want and cannot find. This is the main reason usage data exists, and it is read in aggregate.
We do not sell your data, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not run ad-tracking software in the app.
Transcription, and the one third party who sees your content
When you record a video review, the app sends its audio to OpenAI to be turned into text using their Whisper model. This happens from our server, not your phone. We keep the resulting transcript; we do not keep a separate copy of the extracted audio.
If you would rather nothing left our systems, do not record a video review — a written review is never transcribed and never sent anywhere.
Who else is involved
- Amazon Web Services
- Hosts the app's servers and database, in the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) region.
- Amazon SES
- Delivers transactional email, such as your password reset code.
- OpenAI
- Transcribes video review audio, as described above.
- Apple & Google
- Only if you choose to sign in with them. They tell us your email, name and an account identifier.
- Retailers
- When you tap through to buy something you leave Kumpairs and land on that shop's own site, under their privacy policy, not ours. We do not pass them anything about you.
Where it is kept
Account data, reviews and usage records live in a PostgreSQL database in AWS Europe (Frankfurt). Photos and video attached to reviews are currently stored on the application server's own disk rather than in separate object storage.
Deleting your account
Write to info@kumpairs.com from the address on your account and we will delete it. You can also ask for a copy of what we hold about you, or ask us to correct it.
One thing to know before you ask. Deleting your account removes your account record and detaches your reviews from you — the reviews themselves stay published, with no name and no link back to you. This is deliberate: pulling reviews would distort the ratings other people rely on. If you want a specific review taken down as well, say so in the same message and we will remove it.
Children
Kumpairs is not designed for or directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or who sees it, we will update the date at the top of this page and say what changed. Questions, or anything here that does not match what you see in the app: info@kumpairs.com.
